Rules of the Game
Learn the core rules of Pool Rummy
Pool Rummy is essentially a points-based card game where the value of each player's unmatched cards is added as points at the end of every round. A player who reaches the set limit (such as 101 or 201 points) is eliminated. The last player remaining at the table wins.
Card Values
- Ace (A): 1 point
- Number cards (2–10): their face value in points
- Face cards (J, Q, K): 10 points each
- Joker: 0 points (adds no points when used)
What are Sets and Sequences?
A sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit — for example, the 5, 6 and 7 of Hearts. A set is three or four cards of the same value in different suits — for example, three Kings in Spades, Hearts and Clubs. Forming valid sets and sequences correctly is what makes it possible to bring your points down to zero.
The Role of the Joker
The Joker is extremely important in Pool Rummy at gbaj. A Joker can be used as a substitute for any card, helping to complete an incomplete set or sequence. However, a Joker cannot be used in a pure sequence.
Strategic Tips
Skilled players at gbaj always try to form a pure sequence first. If high-value cards (King, Queen, Jack) cannot be matched, discarding them early is the smart move. Paying attention to what cards your opponents are picking up and discarding keeps you ahead strategically.
